The Cursed Child

If you’ve read Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, you would know that Lord Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange had a child. Her name is Delphini, but she goes by Delphi and if you’ve read Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, you would also know that this child was born in Malfoy Manor right before the Battle of Hogwarts and she was raised by a woman of the name Euphemia Rowle. Delphi grew up knowing nothing about her parentage, but somewhere along the line, her stepfather, Rodolphus Lestrange, found her and told her of her heritage and a prophecy she must fulfill.

That’s all the book reveled. There are so many questions we have after reading the book. I hope this blog helps fill in those blanks.

Delphi’s Birth

In Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, Delphi says she was born before the Battle of Hogwarts. She isn’t really clear on when she was born. And in the book it says she was in her early twenties and part of the book takes place roughly twenty-two after the battle. That would mean Delphi is around twenty-two years old. In that case, she would have been born around 1998.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, when Harry, Hermione, and Ron were in Malfoy Manor in March of 1998, they were confronted by Bellatrix. It’s clear as day that she was not pregnant. This means that Delphi was born prior to that, which means that she didn’t know her parents for very long. The question you may be asking yourself is “So when was Delphi born?”

My theory is that she was born a month before that (February 1998). So that would make Delphi at least one month old when the trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) were at Malfoy Manor. That would mean that Bellatrix ,was at least one month pregnant with Delphi when Dumbledore was killed on the Astronomy Tower.

Did J.K. Rowling Hint On Delphi In The Series?

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (1995), Voldemort says Bellatrix will be rewarded beyond her wildest dreams. Bellatrix was in love with Voldemort. She would have done anything for him without question. What is beyond Bellatrix’s wildest dreams? Is it giving birth to Voldemort’s child?

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (1996), Bellatrix says if she had sons she would gladly give them to the Dark Lord for service. What does that mean? Does that mean she knew she was pregnant? Or was she planning to have a child? I think she was planning on having a child at the time.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (1997), Voldemort tells Bellatrix to kill her niece, Nymphadora Tonks. He said she must prune her family tree. Bellatrix gladly agrees. Now a question you may ask yourself is, “Why would Voldemort ask Bellatrix to prune her family tree randomly?” The answer could be simply because she is a half-blood. What if it was more than that? What if Voldemort knew Bellatrix was pregnant, and didn’t want a person of her lineage sharing the same blood as his child (Bellatrix would have been roughly two months pregnant). Nymphadora was married to Remus Lupin (werewolf). Voldemort was against any creature that was not a pure magical being. He wanted to cleanse the world and make it pure. That would mean Remus Lupin also had to go.

Was Delphi An Accident Or Intentional?

There is no prof that suggests Delphi was an accident or intentional child, but I think Voldemort intentionally had her. There is evidence that Voldemort wanted her. She’s still alive after all.

The Prophecy?

There is a prophecy about Delphi (The Augury). It said that she would bring her father back. But how did this prophecy come to be? There had to be a seer, and the only seer in Harry Potter that we know of it Professor Trelawny. However, she doesn’t seem to be the type of person to give a prophecy to the dark lord willingly. So did he kidnap and torture it out of her and modify her memory? Or is there another seer?

This unknown seer prophesied the fall of the Dark Lord and him rising again. The person who was to bring him back to power was his daughter, the Augury. With this knowledge, Lord Voldemort knew if he did die he’d have an insurance policy to come back like he always does.

So, saddened Voldemort knew he had to produce a child. He knew Bellatrix would have been the perfect mother because of her perfect pure-blood line, plus she would do anything he asked without question. Bellatrix would have seen it as an honor to bear his child.

Where Does Dumbledore Come Into All of This?

I’ve never really asked myself this question before: Why did Voldemort want Dumbledore dead? J.K. Rowling never really explained it. Was it because he wanted to keep his daughter or “insurance policy” safe and away from Dumbldore’s ears? If we truly know Dumbledore, he always find out about his plans.

Did Dumbledore know about the prophecy? That’s unclear. But if he did, he would have done something to prevent it from happening. I don’t see Dumbledore murdering a baby, but I do see him injuring the pregnant Bellatrix and causing a miscarriage. Lord Voldemort wouldn’t allow that. So he came after Dumbledore before Dumbledore even had a chance to get to his unborn child or “insurance policy”. This would be a better explanation to why Lord Voldemort would want Dumbledore to be dead and how the prophecy came to be. Voldemort would have not been the only one who knew about the prophecy. Rodolphus Lestrange knew about it because he told Delphi of the prophecy. So Bellatrix must’ve also known.

Let’s say Narcissa and Lucius did know about the prophecy. That would explain why they didn’t keep her. If they did keep Delphi, she was more likely to fulfill the prophecy than she would have without them.

More to come next week…
